During Ramadan, the local government in downtown Algiers organized a “Mega Iftar” event to promote sharing and solidarity. Thousands of people attended the event and over 2,500 meals were distributed to those in need. This initiative aimed to bring the community together and encourage acts of kindness during the holy month.

During the holy month, Muslims observe a daily fast from dawn until sunset. The fast is broken each evening with a meal called Iftar, which literally means “breakfast” in Arabic. This meal is a time for family and friends to come together and enjoy a variety of foods and drinks. It is a time to reflect on the day’s fast and to give thanks for the blessings of the month. The Iftar meal is an important part of the Ramadan experience and is eagerly anticipated each day.

Maahdia Benghali, the president of the local assembly of downtown Algiers area, recently organized an event aimed at promoting solidarity and bringing families together during the holy month of Ramadan. The event was centered around the idea of families gathering around the table to participate in Ramadan together. According to Benghali, this was an important opportunity for families to come together and strengthen their bonds during this special time.

After several years of absence due to the pandemic, the event has finally returned, much to the delight of the residents of the North African country’s capital. They gathered at Audin Square to celebrate its comeback.

Hanane Kacem, a civil society activist who attended the Mega Iftar, noted that the event brought people together and created a sense of happiness beyond just the meal. “We see that people are really happy and it is not just for the meal but for meeting with others,” she said.

Ramadan, the holy month of Muslims, commenced on March 23rd. During this month, the faithful observe a daily fast from dawn until dusk. This practice is intended to bring them closer to God and to remind them of the struggles of those who are less fortunate.
